Industrial site moves closer to reuse with $296K grant

HARRISON TWP., Montgomery County — A major project to clean up a 1.5-acre industrial site here that offers prime potential for reuse moved another step forward Monday with the award of a $295,975 Clean Ohio grant.

The effort to reuse the former site of American Carco, which put chrome plating on car bumpers, has been under way since 1993. The site, at 2800 Ontario Ave., is in a residential neighborhood off North Dixie Drive, 800 feet west of the city of Dayton’s Miami Well Field.

The money will pay for an assessment to help determine underground contamination and whether the property needs to be remediated.

In November 2009, the city of Dayton’s well field fund awarded the township $779,180 grant. The county provided an $80,000 federal grant. A demolition contract was awarded to Steve Rauch Demolition and Wrecking and the demolition completed this month.

It’ll still be another three years before the site can be marketed for office space, said Jack Kuntz, development director for the township. The property is owned by the state because it was forfeited by a bankruptcy, he added.
