Local woman wins $85K, will appear on Cash Explosion

HAMILTON — It had been decades since Ruth McIntosh last bought a Cash Explosion lottery ticket. The seemingly “Why not?” $1 purchase ended up being worth $85,000.

McIntosh, a lifelong Hamilton resident, bought the winning ticket during a stop on her way home at Meijer on Main Street to pick up dog food. She mailed it in and, two weeks later, got the call she would be going to Columbus.

“When they called me, they said, ‘When you stay (in Columbus), you’re not Ruth McIntosh, you’re a movie star,’” she said. “I told them I’d always be Ruth McIntosh, but they treated me like a movie star.”

It felt like a dream, she said.

McIntosh played the first round June 1 and, after winning $50,000, went on to play June 2 to win an additional $35,000.

Although she returned to Hamilton $85,000 richer, McIntosh said she isn’t planning on anything overly extravagant. She plans on helping out her two sons, Wesley and Charles Edward; memorializing her daughter, Rhonda; and working on a new home.

The trip up to Columbus, however, is something she said had an unexpected impact on her.

“It was wonderful — the people were wonderful,” she said. “It was so nice. So many things were happening at once and you can’t think of anything else. They gave us little gifts all the time.”

Coincidentally, McIntosh also got the chance to speak with Sharon Bicknell, co-host of the show, who is also from Hamilton. After the cameras were off, the two realized they knew many of the same people and were from the same area. The experience capped an unbelievable experience for McIntosh, who encourages everyone to pick up a Cash Explosion ticket.

“It’s easy to win money like that,” she said.

The Cash Explosion episodes featuring McIntosh are scheduled to air June 18 and June 25.
