The company, which makes paper, has its headquarters in Miami Twp. It emerged from bankruptcy protection from creditors in December.
“The cuts were made because of declining demand in our industry and we are taking the necessary steps to ensure the long-term sustainability of NewPage,” NewPage spokesman Cliff Bowers said, according to Wisconsin TV station WQOW and the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune newspaper.
The layoffs include hourly and salary positions, but the company does not anticipate additional job cuts, Bowers said.
“This difficult news,” he said, “but we continue to be committed to our U.S. business.”
NewPage has facilities in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Kentucky, Maryland and Maine.
