"In addition to keeping sidewalks clear, residents are asked to help clear crosswalks, bus stops and fire hydrants," according to a release from the city of Oakwood. "In an emergency, fire crews can be delayed if they need to expend time clearing hydrants."
Ohio Medical Transport drivers often have to negotiate the side streets that are typically the last to get plowed and treated as they provide transportation to patients.
Russ Felter, founder of Ohio Medical Transport, said some of his vehicles are equipped with chains to get traction on those side streets, which can be slippery even after being plowed.
"We have each vehicle equipped with items like salt, shovels, cables, whatever they might need in case of an emergency or unusual situation," Felter said.
After wet roadways froze Wednesday night, Dayton fire crews had to negotiate with ice and snow while battling a fire at an industrial building on Kiser Street.
But getting to the scene wasn't a problem, said District Fire Chief Scott Rowlett.
"the roadway was already plowed so that didn't cause us difficulties at all," Rowlett said.
