Plenty of reasons to go outside this summer in Beavercreek park

Air conditioning and computer games tend to keep us inside more than when we older folks were kids, but sometimes families still look forward to outdoor activities that they can share, especially when those activities are free.

When the urge for a little outdoor entertainment hits this summer, the city of Beavercreek Parks, Recreation & Culture has several options.

Again this summer, the parks department will be offering free movies in the park and its free summer concert series.

The department can offer these free programs because it has several sponsors who are footing the bill, including Frisch’s; Dayton Children’s Medical; John Mitakides, DDS; Kettering/Sycamore Medical Center; McGohan Brabender; The Greene; and the Beavercreek Chamber of Commerce.

All of the movies and concerts will be at Lofino Park at 640 Grange Hall Road, next to the Beavercreek YMCA, except for the July 15 movie “Karate Kid,” which will be at Rotary Park at 2260 Dayton-Xenia Road.

All movies will begin at 9:15 p.m. On June 10, “Mega Mind” will be shown, and on Aug. 19 “Despicable Me” will be shown.

The Sunday concerts, which begin at 7 p.m. and usually last about an hour, will be:

• July 10 – Cotton will play all types of music (rock and roll, country, oldies and Motown).

• July 17 – Spittin’ Image are a music and comedy duo playing music from the ’40s and ’50s.

• July 31 – Mark Snow will entertain with upbeat music, ballads and show tunes.

• Aug. 7 – Sauerkraut German Band is a 16-piece band that specializes in marches, polkas, waltzes and big band music.

• Aug. 14 – Jim McCutcheon performs a classical guitar style.

• Aug. 21 – Shakertown Stompers will entertain the crowd with Dixieland and gospel music.

For the movies and the concerts, patrons should bring their own chairs or picnic blankets.
