BODY CAM: Englewood Rite Aid robbery suspects arrested after pursuit

UPDATE @ 11:40 a.m. (Oct. 16):

Body camera footage obtained by a public records request shows Englewood police arresting one of two men accused of being involved in a robbery at the Rite Aid story on Union Boulevard Monday.

UPDATE @ 7:10 p.m. (Oct. 15): The two suspects in the Monday afternoon robbery of a Rite Aid in Englewood were after controlled substances and now they're headed to jail on robbery and other charges. Englewood police Sgt. Mike Lang said.

An individual came into the business, on Union Boulevard, about 3:30 p.m. and handed the pharmacist a note containing a long list of controlled substances. The note also indicated the man was armed, Sgt. Lang said.

The pharmacist complied, putting the drugs in a paper bag. An eyewitness gave police a description of the getaway vehicle. Lang said police had set up cruisers at I-70 and Main Street, already having been alerted to the robbery by store employees, because police believed the car would head to that area.

It didn’t and tried to elude police before it crashed in the 5700 block of Denlinger Road, just south of East Westbrook Road, in Trotwood.

Englewood police were in pursuit, Lang said, but were not near the vehicle when it went off the side of the road and hit a large concrete block.

Lang said police, with the help of a bystander, caught the driver, who tried to run. The second suspect was trapped in the backseat of the wrecked sedan. Medics extricated him.

Both suspects were taken to a hospital. Their conditions Monday night were not available.

Lang said police plan to file several charges against the driver: robbery, complicity to robbery, fleeing and eluding as well as failure to comply with the signal or order of a police officer.

The department will pursue robbery and other charges against the passenger.

Police were able to identify the two men as the suspects based on surveillance video from the drug store and eyewitness accounts. Both men said they were armed, Lang said, but they were not.
