Three City of Greenville email accounts compromised, sent spam messages

Three City of Greenville email accounts were compromised and sent multiple spam emails, according to a technology manager with the city.

Thursday morning, the affected email accounts sent emails of various subject matter with a Microsoft Word document attached, the spokesperson said in a media release Friday.

Once the user downloaded the Word document, it requested to have Macros enabled and had a supposed link to another Microsoft product, Office 365.

Officials said the email accounts of ekiryluk@cityofgreenville.org, pstrawser@cityofgreenville.org and jcross@cityofgreenville.org were targeted by the attack and sent emails to several other email addresses.

“If you were one to receive said email, please delete the email. If you did in fact open the attachment, contact your IT support department immediately,” the spokesman said.

City officials believe the issue has been property addressed and will be monitored to ensure the problem has been fixed.
