Troy author’s children’s books come with a moral lesson

Fledgling writer self-publishes for better content control

TROY — Even if you don’t always have the right answer, it’s important to help people.

That’s the moral of a recently published children’s book, “Sadie the Skunk,” published by Troy author, Meaghan Fisher.

Fisher, 29, is a former nanny and substitute teacher in the Troy schools. While seeking a publisher for her first book, she decided to create her own self-publishing firm, Gypsy Publications, to better control content.

“I really love kids, and I love to write,” she said.

As a former Concord Elementary School student herself, she’s enjoyed substituting there and reading books to the students, especially fourth graders, who still share the world’s innocence, she said.

“I write because I love children and want to instill in them moral lessons,” she said.

Since her book’s November debut, she’s sold more than 300 copies. Her second book, featuring a Troy plane, “Lars the Monkey Flies a WACO Airplane,” will be debuted at a book release party at 6:30 p.m., March 25, at The Caroline, 5 S. Market St. She expects to have a series of four books featuring animal adventures published in November. She is working on a young adult book about a witch who travels through time.

Her husband, Tim, designs the books, and her friend Marla Fair, a Troy novelist and artist, illustrates them. Fisher will be a presenter at a self-publishing book class for adults taught by Marla Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center, 301 W. Main St. The fee is $30. More information on Fisher is at www.gypsypublications.com.

Fisher has also a children’s blog at www.nannymeaghan.blogspot.com, where she posts a new children’s story with a moral lesson every Monday.

She and her husband have two collies, Sadie and Lexi.
