As a cheerleader, Herdman spends a lot of time at Mechanicsburg High School and the football stadium.
To encourage her, the football team recorded a video and posted it to YouTube. The team lined up and one by one, they each stepped up holding signs to show their encouragement.
Mechanicsburg football coach Kurt Forrest added his own support by letting Herdman know that they’re behind her.
This was something that meant a lot to Herdman and her family.
“We cried,” Ellie Herdman said. “… It meant a lot to me.”
Her mother, Shawn Herdman, believes that the video will help her daughter on many levels.
“The outpouring of support that we’ve had is just unbelievable,” Shawn Herdman said.
Not only is the football team getting involved, but so is the entire community.
A sign in front of the firehouse reads, “Firefighters for Ellie … Stay strong.”
Friends and neighbors are getting involved, too.
“Most of the kids grew up together and their parents grew up together, they’re a family,” said Marcia March, a family friend.
