People who want to throw a party or host a gathering at a Riverside park will have to pay a fee in the future.

Riverside City Council approved instituting a fee for reserving a park shelter or a field at a council meeting last week. The fees are effective immediately, city officials said.

The new fee to reserve a shelter will now be $15 for Riverside residents and $25 for non-residents. The field use application will cost $50, according to the resolution passed by city council.

Riverside City Manager Mark Carpenter said the city decided to add the fee to prevent someone from reserving the shelters for multiple days in a row and not using them.

“Someone who would be paying the fee is invested in using the shelters,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter said the fees will help generate revenue that the city will be able to put back into the parks.

The fee applies to shelters and fields at all the parks in Riverside, including Shellabarger Park, Community Park and Rohrer Park, Carpenter said.

“We think this is a modest fee, compared to what other communities charge,” Carpenter said. “We want people to continue to use our parks and we hope that this fee enables us to make our parks even better in the coming years.”
