3 recent cases involving unintended victims

The Miami Valley has experienced a number of recent incidents involving victims who weren’t the intended target.

The latest child victim was 14-year-old MacKenna Kronenberger in what police described as a homicide early Wednesday morning. Police were dispatched to a home in the 700 block of Morse Avenue around 1 a.m.

The incident followed others with victims under the age of 21:

9-year-old boy: Child shot in Dayton may be retaliation for fatal Trotwood shooting

On Feb. 27, 2017, a 9-year-old boy was struck after gunfire hit a house in the 1100 block of Dennison Avenue. Police believe that the shooting was likely connected to a deadly shooting at Trotwood apartments on Autumn Woods Drive earlier in the day.

13-month-old boy: Mother tells baby hurt in shootout she loves him as he dies

On March 9, 2017, Shawn Smith, 26, stood trial for murder, felonious assault and other charges related to the death of 13-month-old Elijah Johnson after a shootout in a Dayton neighborhood on Jan. 14, 2016. The shootout involved the toddler’s mother’s boyfriend, Isaiah Smith, Shawn Smith and Dontay King.

Isiah Smith walked out of a home carrying Elijah while apparently exchanging fire with Shawn Smith. One witness said the boy was used as a human shield. Elijah suffered a gunshot wound to his foot and chest and died from blood loss, a deputy coroner testified.

20-year-old woman: Babysitter ‘true victim’ in Dayton homicide, police say

On March 13, 2017, babysitter Taylor Bradenburg, 20, who was watching children in a house on Huffman Avnue, died of multiple gunshot wounds after walking outside. Bradenburg had nothing to with the bar fight that preceded the drive-by, police said.
