Safer sidewalks near Dayton Mall now will happen faster

Construction is set to begin later this year on a $1.9 million project to improve pedestrian safety along parts of Lyons Road and Ohio 741 near the Dayton Mall in Miami Twp.

Improvements on Interstate 75’s Lyons Road overpass from Byers Road to the state route and along Ohio 741’s west side north of Lyons were initially targeted for 2019 or thereafter.

But the township said the project is expected to be during the third quarter of 2018. Township trustees voted earlier this month to move forward with the project.

Improvements include the walkway, curbs and gutters, bridge enhancements, and street paving, that will connect to existing sidewalks along Ohio 741, allowing for better access to local businesses within the Miami Crossing District, according to the township.

The project will be paid for by more than $1 million in federal funds and local matching dollars generated from the Dayton Mall area Tax Incremental Financing District, according to the township.
