Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame defeated Centerville 70-63 in a girls high school basketball Division I regional final at Fairmont’s Trent Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Centerville won 70-56 at MND in the regular season and that seemed to fuel the Cougars. MND (25-2) will play Canton GlenOak (25-2) in a D-I state semifinal at Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center at 6 p.m. Friday.
Centerville (25-3) was led by freshman Cotie McMahon’s 20 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Amy Velasco added 16 points and senior Alexis Hutchison 13. It was the fifth time Centerville advanced to a D-I regional and like those other appearances, the Elks are still seeking their first state trip.
Julia Hoefling, a 6-foot-1 center who signed with Loyola University Chicago, wrecked the Elks by converting 9 of 10 close-range shots for a game-high 23 points. KK Bransford added 17 points and Laila Phelia 12.
It was the first Centerville game of the day. The Centerville (20-5) boys basketball team is paired against Mason (18-4) in one of four D-I district finals at UD Arena at 3 p.m.
