The Monroe Swarm 11U baseball team’s offseason work paid dividends during the 2009 season.
The Swarm participated in the Monroe High School baseball team’s winter hitting program, which led to better offensive production during the season, according to coach Jeff Becraft. Competing in the Southwest Ohio League’s American League, the Swarm finished the season with a record of 27-16 overall and 12-6 in league play.
“We had a very successful season,” Becraft said. “To go 11 games over .500 is very good. I am proud of the improvement we are showing as we get older and move forward.”
Leading the offensive charge for the Swarm were Dakota Craft, Casey Lindon, Adam Wagers and Cody Baker, who spent the majority of the season occupying the middle of the lineup. Baker, who alternated between pitcher and catcher, was the most improved all-around player this season, according to Becraft.
“He came on the second half of the season and was lights out,” Becraft said.
Josh McCready anchored the Swarm’s pitching staff, finishing with a team leading 11 wins.
“He just seems to get better as he gets older,” Becraft said. “He’s a smart baseball player. He’s not just out there throwing, he’s pitching.”
Adam Wagers, who also played third base, first base and in the outfield, recorded a no-hitter against the Reading Young Guns. Jake Daulton and Logan Becraft also contributed quality innings on the mound.
Nick Amaya and Ryan Arnold, who shared time at second base, showed their versatility by moving to the outfield when needed.
“They gave us some really good plays in the outfield when they were out there,” Becraft said.
The Swarm finished tied for third place in the 19-team SWOL American League.
Team members were Nick Amaya, Robby Vollrath, Ryan Arnold, Casey Lindon, Josh McCready, Cody Baker, Jake Daulton, Dakota Craft, Logan Becraft, Tyler Beckett and Adam Wagers. The Swarm was coached by Becraft, Mike Daulton, Steve Craft and Todd Arnold.
