Memphis Belle returns to Dayton next week

Legendary bomber visited the Gem City in 1943

The Memphis Belle, the historic World War II bomber, will be unveiled at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force next week.

Here are 3 things to know about the legendary B-17, the first Army Air Forces heavy bomber to fly 25 missions over Nazi-held Europe and return to the United States.

1. Second landing. This is not the first time the Memphis Belle has visited Dayton. In 1943 the plane and crew flew to Dayton while on a war bonds tour of 30 cities across the United States.

2. Special guest. During the visit the crew had lunch at the Moraine Country Club. A special plate and table cloth were set out for their mascot, a Scottish terrier named Stuka.

3. The biggest fan. The crew spoke to as assembly of thousands of National Cash Register workers producing weapons needed for the war. Famed aviator Orville Wright was among the crowd who paid tribute to the war heroes.
