Search for possible glider in Carlisle pond finds nothing

A search of a pond in Carlisle has ended after a possible glider was reported crashing in the water Thursday evening.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced that the search was ended after over four hours when nothing was found.

The glider reportedly crashed into an aggregate pond in the 300 block of Central Avenue in Carlisle, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Ryan Purpura.

Carlisle Police Chief Will Rogers said that a passer-by reported the crash at about 6:10 p.m.

Crews responded quickly, he said, but were unable to find anything, including wreckage.

Members of the Warren County Technical Search Team also responded, and drones were deployed.

Rogers said that at around 9 p.m., three boats were searching in the water, including a crew from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources equipped with side-scanning sonar. Earlier in the evening, an OSHP helicopter was called in from Columbus to search from the air.

Rogers said that there have been no reports of overdue or missing aircraft from local airports.

When asked when crews might call off the search, Rogers said, “We’re going to exhaust everything possible to make sure.”

When later asked if they believe the call was a false alarm, Rogers said that they had no reason to believe that, and that the passer-by had given very specific details about the crash.

Around 50 first responder crews were at the pond helping to search. Multiple agencies took part in the search, including the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Carlisle Police Department, Carlisle Fire Department, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Joint Emergency Medical Services, Franklin Police Department, Franklin Fire and EMS Division, Franklin Township Fire Department, Warren County Technical Rescue Team, Miami Valley Fire Department, Clinton Warren Joint Fire District, American Red Cross and the Federal Aviation Administration.
