Cell phone store break-ins becoming 'epidemic'

Two Montgomery County cell phone store break-ins were investigated overnight and police hope that they can put an end to something they said is becoming a recurring problem.

"It's getting to be a bit of an epidemic," Miami Twp. Sgt. Paul Nienhaus said. "We believe it to be the same crew that's running around hitting all the stores, at least locally, if not beyond."

Nienhaus along with additional Miami Twp. police officers responded to the Verizon, 2799 Miamisburg Centerville Road, shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers arrived to find a side window of the business shattered after some type of stone was thrown.

Police found several Android tablets, headsets and a display speaker that were taken from inside the store, Nienhaus said. Officers were still working with store management to obtain surveillance video to get suspect descriptions in the case.

More than an hour later Trotwood police responding to a similar call at the Verizon store in the Consumer Square Shopping Center.

Officers responded to the business, 5529 Salem Avenue, around 12:40 a.m. after receiving an alarm.

Investigators arrived to find a window of the business busted out again by some type of stone.

Trotwood police did not say if anything was taken from inside the store.

Nienhaus said they are doing everything they can to try to stop the crimes from happening.

"We've been sitting on all of our stores in the township as much as possible," the sergeant said. "It's very frustrating, obviously for anyone involved, especially for law enforcement."
