Washington Twp. residents report mailbox damage from Sunday morning

WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County — Capt. Dee Osterfeld, director of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s substation in the township, said Tuesday, her department was looking into whether the damage to mailboxes in the Denham Court area of the township in the early hours of Sunday, Jan. 17, has any relationship to the Beavercreek mailbox damaging incident Tuesday morning in which more than 14 mailboxes were damaged and two Beavercreek brothers were arrested and charged with criminal damaging.

Patty McDaniel, a resident of Denham Court, said her family’s mailbox was one of about 10 mailboxes knocked down around 4:45 a.m. Sunday in Washington Twp. In that case a red older model vehicle with a truck bed, something like one of those old Ford Broncos, was spotted driving into the mail boxes and knocking them over, she said. She said she saw one of the men get out and retrieve a part of the vehicle knocked off after it hit one of the boxes, a John Deere mailbox that the resident had encased in cement. It hit one box on a metal pole and sent the mail box flying, she said. The vehicle also was driven through several people’s yards, she said. It was driving with no lights on but made a loud noise whenever it hit a mail box, she said.

One resident had paint from the vehicle on his mailbox, she said. Boxes were also hit on some neighboring streets, McDaniel said.

Osterfeld said deputies from her department were gathering information about the mailbox damage Tuesday and planned to talk with Beavercreek police to see if there were any connection between the two incidents.

Sgt. James Wuebben of the Beavercreek Police said Tuesday that the two brothers arrested for criminal damaging in the Beavercreek incident, Robert Wackerman, 27, and Kenneth Wackerman, 24, were driving a red Ford truck when they were arrested, but he said he had no information at that time about the Washington Twp. incident and no idea whether or not they might be related.
